Consider Ram TRX, Land Rover Defender or Jeep Gladiator Mojave with more than 11 inches of ground clearance.
Trucks and SUVs rule the world. But not all of them can go anywhere in the world. This is reserved for real SUVs. Whether rock climbers, desert trailblazers or hounds, they thrive where the pavement ends. Many trucks and SUVs have names that suggest they can go anywhere, but they are usually just exterior packages or trim levels. For example, the Toyota RAV4 Adventure promises adventure (obviously), but it lacks the power and off-road tools.
Here is a list of legal SUV cars and drivers available for 2022. These are off-road beasts, with low-range crawlers that drive all four wheels, suspension high enough to go over obstacles, and a bottom that protects the mechanics as you crawl over rocks. The only way to earn a place on this list is to demonstrate real ability and courage.

Every 4Runner is capable, but only the all-wheel-drive TRD Pro is the most powerful, with an electronic rear differential lock, thick floor guards, 2.5-inch Fox inboard bypass shocks, and specially tuned front springs to help lift the nose. up to 1.0 inches. The doors aren't designed to be removed and stored like a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Mustang, but the 4Runner's rear windshield drops down - a neat trick no one else has.
The large three-row Toyota Sequoia SUV is called the TRD Pro. Toyota knows there are benefits to these models and will push the TRD Pro brand with all its might. The Sequoia is the brother of the Tundra, so they have a lot in common with the TRD Pro hardware. The exterior was strengthened, the suspension was strengthened, the Fox front and rear shock absorbers were strengthened. It rides on 18-inch BBS wheels with all-terrain tires, and the all-wheel drive system includes low gear ratios. A Torsen-locking center differential helps transfer the 401 lb-ft of peak torque from the 5.7-liter V-8 engine to the wheels.
Marty McFly dreams of one. The reason is obvious. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro uses an all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case and an electronically locking rear differential. Suspension is raised by custom TRD springs and 2.5-inch Fox inboard bypass shocks. The aggressive, blocky exterior features a distinctive grille, and the whole thing rides on 16-inch wheels wrapped in Kevlar-reinforced Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. In addition, a smart camera system helps the driver spot obstacles.
Brand new for 2022, this time the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is powered by a 389bhp twin-turbocharged V-6 engine and the rear suspension is now a coil spring. The TRD Pro has a 1.1" front lift and a 2.5" internal Fox bypass coil. Styling-wise, the TRD Pro gets black 18-inch TRD Pro wheels and smoke-finished LED headlights. Aluminum front skid plates, underbody armor for the transfer case and fuel tank, and dual tailpipes are standard.
The name Power Wagon dates back to just after World War II, when Dodge repurposed its military trucks for civilian service. Today's Power Wagon is based on the Ram 2500 HD, a truck built to get the job done, not just to watch the off-road park. The Power Wagon has a raised suspension for increased ride height and wider entry and exit angles. It also adds essential off-road features such as locking front and rear differentials and detached front anti-roll bars. The front winch can hold up to 12,000 pounds in case something comes off. The Power Wagon comes with a 6.4-liter V-8 petrol engine with 410 horsepower.
The Ram 1500 Rebel is the ultimate full-size off-road truck. While all 1500 4x4s come with an off-road package that includes an electronically locking rear differential, 32-inch tires, skid plates, upgraded dampers, descent control and more, the Rebel adds style. Additional help is a height-adjustable quad air suspension, a two-stage BorgWarner underdrive transfer case, and a set of 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires. Available in four-cab or cavernous double cab body styles, the Rebel offers a choice of engines including a modest 260-hp 3.0-liter diesel, 305-hp 3.6-liter V-6 with eTorque and a 5.7-liter or non-supercharged V-8 hybrid.
Hold on to your butt, this 702 horsepower pickup truck is a supercharged SUV that can jump high enough to avoid Jurassic Park. The Ram 1500 TRX costs around $72,000, but it's 3.3 inches taller than the regular Ram 1500 no matter which option you choose. The half-ton Hellcat comes standard with 35-inch tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels (or locks - a fitting option), giving the TRX 11.8 inches of ground clearance. We hit 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, making it the fastest truck we've ever tested. The TRX can tow up to 8,100 pounds (100 pounds more than the F-150 Raptor) and gets a total of 12 mpg, making it the most economical pickup truck you can buy today. Those looking for adventure can opt for a truck with two 103-pound spare wheel and tire assemblies, one of which fits in the bed.
Deliveries of the popular Rivian R1T are slowly starting. The all-electric pickup truck has a base price of $74,075, but it packs 800 horsepower and a whopping 14.9 inches of ground clearance. The R1T uses a four-motor system - one for each wheel, each of which works independently. If the passenger rear tire needs more torque than the driver's rear side, no problem. Regenerative braking is also handy for extending range by saving brake pads and pumping a small amount of energy into the battery. With a range of 300 miles (300 miles) on a single charge, the Rivian R1T should be able to get you where you want to go and back. The company also introduced the Rivian Adventure network of 600 hotspots with up to 300kW fast charging capability.
Nissan positions the Titan XD between half-ton and three-quarter-ton full-size pickups. The most powerful off-road bike in the Titan XD lineup is the Pro-4X. Using an XD ladder frame chassis, the Pro-4x is equipped with specially tuned Bilstein shocks, a two-stage transfer case, an electronic rear differential lock, hill descent control and studded all-terrain tires. The exterior gets cheeky headboard decals, black tow hooks on the front, red trim and a different grille. The standard engine is the familiar 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V-8.
If XD was too much, there's also a half-ton Nissan Titan Pro-4X powered by Nissan's 5.6-liter V-8 engine. Pro-4X models feature all-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, an electronically locking rear differential, Bilstein shock absorbers, hill descent control, and all-terrain tires. It has better approach, steering and exit angles than other Titans and there are plenty of skid plates protecting the lower radiator, oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank. While the Pro-4X isn't as rugged as the XD, it's built to survive.
New for 2022, the Nissan Frontier is a marked improvement over the truck it replaces. It's not all new, but it's now the most powerful midsize pickup truck ever, with a 310-horsepower V-6 bolted to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Pro-4X was fitted with Bilstein shocks, a front skid plate, and extra armor for the transfer case and fuel tank. It's also one of two trim levels that get a 10-speaker audio system as standard. Frontiers are rear-wheel drive Pro-X models with the highest ground clearance of 9.8 inches.
Mercedes has been producing the G-Class since 1979. It was not originally intended to be sold to the commoners, the Kardashians, or anyone else. This is a military machine that can withstand a blow and is easily repaired. Today's G-Class all-wheel drive system is one of the most advanced, with three locking differentials that can be controlled for climbing uphill. The G-Class loses its beefy front axle as a result of the redesign, but offers a respectable 9.5 inches of ground clearance and can traverse 27.6 inches of water. In the US, the G-Class comes in two variants. The G550 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with 416 horsepower. It's not lethargy. However, this is not an AMG G63. This beast is equipped with a 577-horsepower version of the same engine. It was a square rocket ship. Oh yes, it's also expensive.
Over the past few years, the Lexus GX has built a reputation as a luxury SUV with real power. The GX features a truck-like body on a frame with self-levelling suspension and optional adaptive dampers. Permanent four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case provide goat prowess off-road. You do not need an SUV that can compete with goats? Power comes from a 4.6-liter V-8 with 301 horsepower. These features also include a low gear, limited slip center differential, hill descent control, active traction control, and an available crawl control system. The latter helps the GX maintain low forward or reverse speed when crossing uneven surfaces and difficult obstacles.
Here's the bottom line: when the queen needs to go somewhere, she usually goes in a Range Rover. But luxury is meaningless without the ability to back it up. Every Range Rover is equipped with an adaptive all-wheel drive system and adjustable air suspension to help you overcome harsh road conditions. It also has a two-speed transfer case, electronic differential lock, descent control and rear wheel steering. It will look good. Range Rover offers two wheelbases and an incredible range of trim levels, as well as standalone options. If you are a member of the royal family, then here you are going (or being driven) - anywhere, damn it.
Land Rover Discovery is the model they use to express their style. Once the Discovery is off-road, the weirdness is gone and its sophisticated all-wheel drive system can showcase its talents. Available air suspension provides up to 11.1 inches of ground clearance and wide entry and exit angles. The Disco can also float in water up to 35.4 inches deep. Land Rover's Advanced Landscape Management System monitors road conditions and includes customizable settings. There are two engines available. The base engine uses a turbocharged inline-four with 296 hp, and a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 with 340 hp is also available.
The Discovery Sport is as close to price as any other Land Rover. Like other all-terrain vehicles, it combines luxury and off-road qualities. It's not the company's most rugged offering, but the Disco Sport is able to wade over 23 inches deep. It also has an approach angle of up to 23.4 inches and a departure angle of 31 inches. Its standard all-wheel drive system is paired with selectable driving modes, including settings for gravel, snow, mud and sand. Also useful is the ability to increase the slope to 45 degrees, as well as turning off the gradient and controlling the descent from the hill. Discovery Sport models come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 246 horsepower. But the top of the Discovery Sport R-Dynamic range could be with a 286bhp version of the same powerplant.
The new Land Rover Defender has finally arrived. Like the Jeep Wrangler, the Defender was offered in two-door (called the 90) and four-door (called the 110) models. Power is provided by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 296 hp. or a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 395 hp. The Defender's towing capacity is pretty solid for its size at 8,201 pounds. Unlike its namesake, the new Defender features a unibody design with fully independent suspension. The maximum truck setting offers 11.5 inches of ground clearance, matching the Ford Bronco with Sasquatch trim and 0.7 inches higher than the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. As the photo above suggests, Land Rover tells us that the 110 can navigate up to 35.4 inches of water before you have to anchor and turn around.
The Jeep Gladiator builds on the successful and attractive four-door Wrangler formula by adding a pickup at the rear. It also means that the extended wheelbase can greatly improve the quality of everyday driving. It is the easiest Wrangler derivative to use and drive, making it one of the top 10 C/D cars of 2020. The roof and doors can be removed. An optional split front sway bar improves axle articulation on rough terrain, and beefy 33-inch BFGoodrich KM all-terrain tires (optional) look cool and improve traction. Available in a variety of trim levels up to the Rubicon model, it is ready to conquer most mountains. The base engine is a 3.6-liter V-6 with 285 hp. mated to a six-speed manual transmission, but Jeep recently added a 3.0-litre turbodiesel with 260bhp. mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both the Gladiator Rubicon and Mojave offer over 11 inches of ground clearance.
This is how a Jeep should be. Of all the CJ models since the first military MB, this is the Jeep Wrangler. Familiar looks and great performance right out of the box. Each model has four-wheel drive and two solid axles, and its two- and four-door bodies can be easily removed to leave them doorless and/or doorless for an unrivaled exploratory display. The Jeep offers 10.9 inches of ground clearance, a 44-degree approach angle, and a 37-degree exit angle. Its front and rear axles can be fitted with locking differentials and a common two-speed transfer case with low gear ratios for optimal flotation and traction. The Rubicon's most hardcore trim includes detached front anti-roll bars and beefy 33-inch BFGoodrich KM all-terrain tires.
Despite the unibody body and transversely mounted engine, the Jeep Cherokee in Trailhawk trim really excels on the road. The Trailhawk uses the company's most advanced all-wheel drive system (called Active Drive Lock) that maintains a mechanically locking rear differential and a low 51.2:1 gear ratio. This equipment includes selectable traction control, including rock mode and hill descent control . The off-road suspension provides 8.7 inches of ground clearance and wider entry and exit angles than other Cherokees. The standard engine is a 3.2-liter V-6 with a nine-speed automatic transmission. A 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine was optional.
